Depending on the time period when ther student graduated some resources are available online:

The Alumni Catalog of 1917  lists all graduates of the University from 1857 - 1916, so if you are looking for someone in the very earliest years of the 20th Century try this.

Commencement Programs for 1955, and 1960-1987 are online:
http://www.library.wustl.edu/units/spec/archives/digital/commence-programs.html

You can also try searching the library catalog for the student's name to see if they completed a thesis (or for undergraduates a senior paper). 

If it you do not locate the information online, University Archives can assist you in locating other original sources -- including campus directories, other commencement programs, and yearbooks.  Please email if you do not find the information online.
