Some theses and dissertations (ETDs) may have embargo dates that are 100 years from now. There are a few possible reasons:

1) Depending on discipline, authors may be allowed to request a 100-year (or permanent) embargo after approval.

2) Washington University dissertations are submitted to ProQuest, and one of the options offered by ProQuest is to restrict the work from being indexed by search engines. Because it is not possible to restrict Open Scholarship from indexing by search engines, when an author selected “No” for this option in the past, a 100-year embargo was applied. These works are not available electronically through Open Scholarship, but may still be available through ProQuest.
