Loan Periods:

Loan periods for local, i.e., WashU items, vary greatly depending on what it is. For information on the loan periods of Library items, see our Loan Periods section under our Borrowing and Returns page.

For materials borrowed from other libraries:

** MOBIUS service interruption. Click for more information **

  • MOBIUS: The loan period for all MOBIUS materials is 4 weeks. You may renew items twice. Faculty and graduate students can have a maximum of 30 requests or checkouts at any time, while undergraduate students and university staff can have a maximum of 20. If you do not return books promptly, your borrowing privileges may be blocked and/or a fine may be placed on your library account. MOBIUS items cannot be re-checked out after the two renewal limit.

  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL): The policies on loan periods for Interlibrary Loan (ILL) items, as well as whether they can be renewed, varies greatly based upon the particular lender. You may want to check with the Circulation staff regarding your item, using the contact info below.

Returning Items:

Books from the WashU Libraries collection and books requested through Interlibrary Loan or MOBIUS may be returned...

  • To the Help Desk any of the Danforth Campus Libraries
  • The book drops by Olin's North and South entrances
  • Dropped off in one of our many drive-up drop-box locations, located along this downloadable map.
    • Note:
    • Access to some libraries' book returns may be limited to hours the libraries or their buildings are open.
    • Olin Library book slot(s) and the drive up book returns are available 24/7

Grace Period:

There is a grace period for regularly circulating items during which no overdue fines are accrued.  The grace period for graduate students is 10 days.  The grace period for undergraduate students, university staff, and courtesy card borrowers is 4 days.

Please note that these grace periods do not apply to reserve items.

For more information, see our Borrowing and Returns page, under Returns.

Renewing Items:

Renewing checked out materials:

  • Items that have not been requested by another borrower or reached the renewal limit may be renewed using the My Catalog function on the library system.
  • Patrons may also renew by bringing materials to a Danforth Campus library.

  • If the books have reached their renewal limit or are very overdue, they must be brought to a library Help Desk to be checked in.
  • Patrons may log into their ILLiad accounts online to renew interlibrary loan items. Sometimes, however, the renewal option may not be visible.
  • For questions about renewing Interlibrary loans, patrons may email the ILL staff at ill@wumail.wustl.edu

Renewal Limits:

Renewal options vary widely depending on the item type and whether it is in the WashU Libraries collection or material borrowed from another library, i.e., an item obtained through Interlibrary Loan.
