The human wave did not originate at Washington University in St. Louis. This is a case of mistaken identity.

The earliest recorded human wave was created at the University of Washington, Seattle, by cheerleader Rob Weller and UW Band Director Bill Bissell at a UW Husky football game on October 31, 1981.
